Building brands with purpose requires a host of different activities: Dreaming up creative solutions to strategic CSR problems. Creating clever, articulate content and concepts. Telling stories with world-class visual design. It’s easy to focus on the work – but thinkPARALLAX is a lot more than just a job. This timeline highlights a few of the non work-related things that make thinkPARALLAX the unique business that it is. The nature of our work is pretty serious stuff – and these things keep us grounded.
Each Monday morning at thinkPARALLAX kicks off with an all-company breakfast in our conference room. This gives everyone a chance to catch up, discuss the upcoming week, talk about upcoming projects, and get our engines running. To ensure that it’s a group effort, we take turns bringing food for the rest of the team. Example: our VP of Client Services, Jeff Sutton, brought bacon and maple syrup covered donuts (he’s Canadian) a few months ago – and it stands out as one of the best breakfasts in recent memory.
Every Tuesday, our yoga instructor in residency (Tara) drops by the office to lead thinkPARALLAX in a group yoga session. This gives us a much-appreciated (and often much-needed) respite from staring into our computer screens. Many of us aren’t very good (or very limber) but Tara does a great job of challenging us without making the practice impossible. And it pays dividends, helping keep our bodies and minds limber.
On any given day when the waves are up, you might see wetsuits hung up to dry in front of our office. The D Street stairs are just a few blocks away, so we can run down to surf in less than five minutes. Or, if it’s especially good, Swamis, Pipes, and Seaside Reef are all great surf spots that are only a few miles from our office. Next time you’re in our office, see if you can spot one of the many surfboards we have laying around.
The platform for the Coaster (train connecting north and south San Diego county) is only two blocks from the thinkPARALLAX office, so many of us utilize public transportation to make the journey to Encinitas. This train ride is a great part of working at thinkPARALLAX. While everyone else slogs through rush-hour traffic on the freeways, we can relax with a book, finish sending emails, or watch the waves roll. To make things sweeter, thinkPARALLAX covers most of the cost associated with riding the train to encourage us to stay off of the roads and reduce our carbon footprint.
The weeks at thinkPARALLAX always start with a shared meal, so it’s fitting that they also end with one. Every Friday at thinkPARALLAX is marked by Fun Lunch Friday – where we all leave the studio for an hour to get out and eat at one of downtown Encinitas’s many great lunch spots. This gives us a chance to get out of the office, relax and plan our weekend activities, and connect over something that isn’t work-related: great food.
