In September 2015, the United Nations adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – a set of seventeen international goals designed to pave the way toward a sustainable future for mankind. Goal number 12 calls for “responsible consumption,” something that many forward-thinking clothing manufacturers have already began to address. (See H&M Conscious for an example of the clothing industry’s recent progress.)
At thinkPARALLAX, we’re also trying to do our part to encourage those around us to consume responsibly. Every six months for the past four years, we have hosted a clothing exchange called Swap for Good, giving local women a chance to trade in lightly worn clothes and accessories for a few cute new outfits – without perpetuating the cycle of consumption that often accompanies fashion. At the end of the night, all unclaimed outfits are donated to benefit the local women’s shelter.
